1. Search Engine rankings for key phrases (2 to 6 word search strings). These phrases should be directly related to your business by area of expertise within a product/service classification and/or geographically targeted searching.

2. Effective use of paid advertisement-style listings linked to a search. These are pay-per-click (PPC) ads that are auction-based in terms of pricing. Your account is charged IF and WHEN the ad is clicked on. The 2 most important ad syndicates are on Google and Yahoo.

3. Increasing incoming linking partnerships. Inbound links represent connections from other sites that recognize sufficient and high-quality content on your site and want to link to that content. Inbound links may take the form of paid relationships (e.g. ThomasRegister.com or MachineToolBuilder.com) that sell links from specific searches to your site, as well as reciprocal or complimentary links.

4. Traceable, statistical information must be used as part of tracking of the 3 methods above to increase traffic and activity on your website. This tracking/reporting needs to be implemented prior to the beginning of a campaign. It must provide information that can be used to develop and modify future marketing efforts both online and offline. Ongoing analysis is the only effective way of both assessing improvement over time and documenting the need for further modifications.
